Practicum Library Project

Library Project – Genealogy Resource Guide (Blog Post)

When it came time to consider my library project, I was keen to work on something useful that would genuinely meet a need of the Fox River Public Library District (FRVPLD) community. But what? My supervisor Heather suggested that I play to my strengths and work on creating a Genealogy Resource Guide. Perfect!

According to the PR manager Kirstin, the FRVPLD hasn’t truly devoted much time to publicizing their genealogy resources to patrons. The solution is this Genealogy Resource Guide. It was posted on their library blog on 03 Dec 2021:

[Note: FRVPLD staff tweaked the guide’s formatting to better mesh with their website’s blog layout. That removed the embedded links from the images.]

Both Heather and the Adult and Teen Services department gave me guidance about the parameters of the project’s scope, focus, and formatting. It was limited to just 1-2 pages, with a primary focus on free local resources. I broke the guide down into four main groups of materials: physical FRVPLD resources located on-site, FRVPLD e-resources, local genealogical/historical societies, and other helpful online resources.

Library Project – PR & eNews Blurb

Per Kirstin, when it comes time to use the blog post, the PR department will typically use the content in multiple ways to boost engagement. For example, they will send out a small eNews blurb in the weekly online mailings and several social media posts giving brief snapshots of each of the four different resource groups. I created the eNews blurb copy [NOTE: the blog post link is not active].
